Brake Rotors
Brake Rotor Finite Element Analysis in ANSYS for Brakes System Section of University of Toronto Formula Racing Team.
For the brakes system of the University of Toronto Formula Racing 2022 Car, I designed brake rotors in SolidWorks and carried out FEA in ANSYS to evaluate the performance of rotors under tensile and compressive stresses. The main objective was to keep the mass relatively low and not use a lot of drilled holes. The results obtained in ANSYS were compared to the required safety factor to check if each rotor design met the requirements. According to the FEA analysis, notes were made to improve the designs in areas of stress concentration or areas that experienced failure due to poor design geometry. The values, notes, rotor designs, and screenshots of FEA results were gathered in an Excel spread sheet as can be seen in figures below.
